As-Sahab Interview with Abu Dujanah Al-Khorasani

I haven’t watched the video, just took a quick read of the transcript. It is interesting.

A few things stood out. First the initial targeting of the GID  handler and then expansion of the operation to target CIA.

This type of target creep  is not unusual in AQ-specific operations. But in the broader context of this particular operation  I found it very interesting because of the knowledge Dujana had about how he was being handled, and the turnaround time in changing the operational direction of the planned attack against his GID handler and then expanding it to include the CIA–on the basis of Dujana’s knowledge.

While this could lead one to conclude capacity is higher than previously thought, and/or not as damaged by drone campaigns etc, I think at least part of this “capacity” can be attributed to close micromanagement of the attack (and Dujana more generally) by the mini shura he mentions.

I also found interesting Dujana’s mention that information in his possession (presumably on his computer  seized by GID)  could have compromised mujahideen operations. This  points to pre-existing, relatively senior links, which have been alluded to in some OS reporting.

The mention of Louis Attiya Allah, of all people, was also curious.

Finally, interesting, too, that it took Sahab so long to produce this.  It is certainly not what it used to be.

Do you think it could have been timed to come out when the new issue of Vanguards of Khurasan would be ready? This of course doesn’t necessarily contradict the idea that Al-Sahab is slipping. Just interested in your thoughts.

I haven’t seen the new issue. Something to think about though.
I do, however, suspect, it is more to do with Sahab going down the toilet.

It would have, I agree, have been more “opportune” for Al-Sahab to release the new issue and all of this material closer to the date of the attack. As you have noted in the recent past, the quality of releases, by and large, has noticeable declined. Even Harakat al-Shabab al-Mujahideen has put together materials rivaling current Al-Sahab material (in my opinion), chief among them their September video. And AQIM and AQAP’s videos consistently (again in my opinion) best AQC.

Agree. Fascinating to see brand AQ get trumped, I think.
