John Brennan says it like it is

Politically motivated criticism and unfounded fear-mongering only serve the goals of al-Qaeda. Terrorists are not 100-feet tall. Nor do they deserve the abject fear they seek to instill. They will, however, be dismantled and destroyed, by our military, our intelligence services and our law enforcement community. And the notion that America’s counterterrorism professionals and America’s system of justice are unable to handle these murderous miscreants is absurd.

Jim Dunnigan’s global military briefings over at Strategy Page have frequent AFPAK entries that are quite good as well. A good counterbalance to the mainstream media which does not have experience or perspective to give the overall picture like Jim does.

The whole Abdulmutallab thing is a tempest in a teapot. There are never guarantees over whether a subject will talk — whether in military, intelligence or law enforcement hands.

That said, I’m not a fan of Brennan because he’s busy politicizing intelligence and national security while reprimanding others for doing so. Hypocrites of any stripe bother me. There is a lot of spin and half-truths coming out of Brennan as he’s made the media circuits since Abdulmutallab was detained.

The amount of money and effort expended to get Abdulmutallab to talk after he was afforded a lawyer and refused to cooperate further (i.e. spending weeks with his family in Nigeria and flying them to the U.S.) is extraordinary. To compare that case to the mundane-by-comparison-tools available to military interrogators is apples and oranges.
