Update & some thoughts on Awlaki

Greetings all.

For those who haven’t noticed, I’ve been off the grid for a while with family commitments and dealing with some other things. I won’t be floating around as often as I was but I’m trying to get back into some form of regular blogging on top of other stuff.

So, to that end, I wrote a little piece for The Australian on my take on the killing of Awlaki.

You’ll notice too there’s a new title in my bio line.  I had been meaning to put a note up about that but then events intervened.  So that’s my other news…. I’m proud to come on board  as a Research Associate with the fine folks at the United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney.

I read your article in the Australian and it reflects your lack of understanding of the role that sh. Awlaqee played in the English-speaking Muslim world, especially among the youth that were trying to learn about Islaam.

Your characterization of him as re-hashing other people’s ideas was particularly strange, considering your academic background. Did you never have a teacher who had the ability to take a subject and present it using primary sources and commentary by established experts in the field in a way that made you love the subject and desire to pursue your studies?

While I disagree with your sentiment, I must admit your make some compelling arguments in this piece. Terrorism as an institution needs to be controlled if not destroyed. Regardless of Awlaki’s “newcomer” status in the “inner circle” as you put it, he still contributed to terrorism as a whole, and thus, was eliminated. No matter his role, he was a participant.
