Bin Laden: Can You Hear Me Now? | The Foundry
It’s not even cynical Friday but I just can’t help myself because this type of commentary gets me soooo cranky. It reveals a complete failure to understand the dynamics of terrorism, not least how al Qaeda operates.
Yes, go and answer bin Laden and in doing so give him the de-facto status of the leader of a state instead of the leader of a few hundred core followers and a few thousand hanger ons. Really, because legitimizing and thereby lionising him in this way is such a *great* idea.
Responding directly to bin Laden is completely counter productive. The more people respond to bin Laden, the more influence he gets. He is not the leader of a state. He is not even the leader of a substantial group of people. Following advice like this will give him that status, and make the job of countering al Qaeda even harder.
Ugh. Rant over.
